Who’s Watching Who?

A True Story by Lloyd W. Alexander

Charlie and I used to poke around the edges of Scarborough Marsh, hoping to catch birds going about their business. One day, I spotted a chickadee slipping in and out of a little nest hole and pointed it out to him. Charlie lit up like a kid on Christmas, staring so hard at that hole the bird stopped coming and going. Then, the chickadee landed on a branch right next to his head and started watching him.

I kid you not, Charlie was studying the nest while the chickadee was studying Charlie. He finally turned just as it flew off.

“Was that thing just watching me?”

“Yep. Wondering what the heck you were doing staring at its nest.”

We’d gone out to watch birds. Apparently, one of them decided to watch us right back.

It’s a small memory, but it still makes me smile.
